I'm currently staying at Metung on the Gippsland Lakes, about 300 kilometres east of Melbourne. It's close to Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance, about 20 minutes to 30 minutes drive from each of those. I don't think I've actually been to Metung before, despite living at Bairnsdale for a year or so in the 1980s. Gee, that's a long time ago, isn't it? It's a small town, a population of about 1,500 people, but that swells during tourist periods.
I'm going to be here until the 22nd of April, so I'll be here through Easter and I expect it'll be quite busy then. I'm staying at a house that's fairly close to Bancroft Bay, which overlooks a peninsula on the other side of the lake. Then there's another strip of land and then there's the ocean. The Gippsland Lakes are quite an intriguing area and I'll probably explain more about that later on.
Metung is a popular holiday spot and, as I say, there will be a lot of people here over the Easter period. Looking at its history, it appears to date back to the 1860s and 1870s when the Gippsland Lakes were used for transport, getting goods from Melbourne and Sydney through to Sale in particular, using the lakes as a navigation method and the rivers.
I'm really looking forward to this day. It's going to be a lot of fun looking after two little pups, Shih Tzu Poodle Crosses, and I'm going to be taking them for lots of walks and exploring this beautiful area.
